Why do scrap metal quotes differ for the same load?

Two contractors can look at the same scrap load and reach different numbers when they make different assumptions about the material, sorting, quantity, or handling.

The short answer

The short answer

Scrap metal pricing depends on what the material is, how clearly it is separated and identified, how much is available, and what handling the load requires. Two quotes can differ because one contractor has priced a cleaner, more clearly sorted load or included different purchasing and handling assumptions.

The material itself affects the starting point

Copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, insulated wire and cable, electric motors, and other equipment are not treated as one material. A load that contains several types may need to be assessed by category instead of receiving one simple value.

The condition and form of the material also matter. Clean, separated metal is easier to identify than material mixed with attachments, other metals, or nonmetal components. If one contractor sees several recoverable categories and another treats the load as mixed material, their numbers may not match.

Sorting and contamination change the calculation

Sorting gives the purchaser more information about what is actually in the load. Wire, motors, construction and demolition scrap, and industrial material can include several recoverable components, so the way those items are separated can affect how they are assessed.

Unclear contents create room for different assumptions. One quote may be based on the material being separated and ready for assessment, while another may allow for additional handling or may value the load more cautiously until its contents are confirmed.

Quantity and access are part of the job

A small amount of scrap and a bulk load do not create the same purchasing or handling task. Commercial, industrial, and bulk scrap may involve different arrangements from a straightforward load of separated household material.

The amount of material, how it is packed, and how easily it can be reached can all affect the work involved. When comparing quotes, ask whether the number covers only the material or also reflects collection, loading, sorting, and other handling connected with the arrangement.

Compare the assumptions, not just the numbers

Before choosing a quote, write down the material categories, approximate quantity, condition, and whether the load includes equipment or nonmetal parts. Photos and a clear description can help each contractor assess the same information.

Then ask each contractor to explain what is included and what could change after the material is checked. A lower number may reflect a narrower description of the load, while a higher number may account for more sorting or handling. The useful comparison is the one based on the same material and the same arrangement.

Does separating scrap metal always change the quote?

It can. Separating copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, wire, equipment, and other materials makes the contents clearer and may prevent several categories from being treated as one mixed load.

Why can a bulk scrap quote differ from a smaller load?

The quantity, packing, access, and handling needs may be different. A bulk scrap purchasing arrangement can require a different assessment from a smaller amount of prepared material.

What should I send with a request for a scrap quote?

Describe the material, list the main categories, give an approximate quantity, and explain whether it is sorted, mixed, attached to equipment, or part of construction, demolition, commercial, or industrial work.
